Self-clamping spring collet life and design

December 06, 2021

The collet chuck is a more commonly used clamping tool in machining. It is usually used to loosen and lock the thread at the end of the collet to clamp and loosen the workpiece. This is a cumbersome part of the large-volume, simple-cutting parts, such as the end-faced drilling parts of Figure 1 and the end-faced and drilled parts shown in Figure 2. The labor intensity of the workers is large and the benefits are not high.

The feeding spring collet of our factory single-axis automatic lathe has a long service life, the chuck is worn, and the elastic force is reduced, which will result in poor feeding. Sometimes the self-made spring collet is not tight due to its own quality problems, which affects the feeding. In this case, the column should be replaced or reworked. Now use a small circlip to extend the life of the collet.

The collet chuck is a kind of centering clamping mechanism with high centering accuracy. It is mostly used for semi-finishing or roughing of smaller diameter (d≤30mm) bar parts. Figure 1 is a schematic view of the shape of the collet in a natural state (regardless of the expansion). In use, the collet is moved axially within the spindle taper hole, and the chafer of the collet is contracted in the A direction under the action of the taper surface, thereby achieving centering clamping of the workpiece (or tool).
